Voltim Global runs Turkey–Iran road freight in both directions: full truckloads, part loads, oversized and project cargo and ADR dangerous goods by truck from Turkey (Türkiye) to Iran, from Iran to Turkey and through Turkey from Europe and Russia. Most trucks cross at the Gürbulak–Bazargan border gate. We plan the vehicle, prepare the transit documents (TIR carnet or T1 and the CMR consignment note), coordinate the border crossing and report the truck's position every day until delivery.
We have carried international road freight since 2014 and have completed more than 1,500 trips across all our lanes. Our offices are in Mersin (head office), Istanbul, Moscow and Budapest. We do not have an office, partner or agent in Iran: loading, documents, border coordination, tracking and delivery on the Iran lane are managed by our own team.
What is Turkey–Iran road freight?
Turkey–Iran road freight is the movement of goods by truck between Turkey and Iran across a land border, usually under a customs transit document such as a TIR carnet and with a CMR consignment note as the contract of carriage. It is one branch of international road freight and covers three kinds of flow:
- Exports to Iran: goods loaded in Turkey and delivered to a consignee in Iran.
- Imports from Iran: goods loaded in Iran and delivered to Turkey, either cleared at the border or carried in transit to an inland customs office.
- Through traffic: cargo from the European Union or Russia that crosses Turkey on its way to Iran, and cargo from Russia that crosses Iran on its way to Turkey.
Which services does Voltim Global offer on the Iran lane?
Every Iran shipment is planned as a single operation, from the loading slot to the signed delivery note. The services below can be combined in one quote:
- Full truckload (FTL) trucks dedicated to one shipper, from loading point to consignee.
- Part loads (LTL) for consignments that do not fill a trailer.
- Oversized and heavy cargo with route checks and special permits, and project logistics for multi-truck industrial moves.
- ADR dangerous goods transport with suitably equipped vehicles and documents; acceptance conditions on the Iranian side are confirmed with the consignee before loading.
- Export customs clearance in Turkey, transit customs formalities and bonded and transit transport under a TIR carnet or T1.
- Daily vehicle tracking and reporting from loading to delivery.
- Door-to-door delivery, plus CMR carrier liability insurance and all-risks cargo insurance on request.
Which border crossings connect Turkey and Iran?
The Gürbulak–Bazargan crossing is the main road gateway between Turkey and Iran. It links Doğubayazıt in Ağrı province with Bazargan in Maku county, West Azerbaijan province. The other crossings are listed below; which one a truck uses is fixed in the trip plan.
| Crossing (Turkey – Iran) | Turkish side | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Gürbulak–Bazargan | Doğubayazıt, Ağrı | Main road gateway; the rebuilt Turkish customs facility opened in April 2026. |
| Kapıköy–Razi | Van | Modernisation for commercial traffic was reported as under way by the Turkish Ministry of Trade in January 2025. |
| Esendere–Serow | Yüksekova, Hakkari | Reopened after renovation in 2017 as the third major gate to Iran (Ministry of Trade). |
| Borualan and Sarısu | Eastern Turkey | Named by Turkish industry bodies among the crossings where more capacity is requested. |
Note: Dilucu–Sederek is often mentioned in the same context, but it is the border with Nakhchivan (Azerbaijan), not with Iran.
A typical export trip from Turkey to Iran runs through these stages:
| Stage | Point | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Loading | Shipper's site in Turkey | Truck positioned, cargo loaded and secured, CMR consignment note prepared. |
| 2. Customs departure | Turkish customs office | Export declaration completed; TIR carnet or T1 transit declaration opened; load compartment sealed. |
| 3. Road leg in Turkey | Route to the eastern border | Daily position reports to the shipper and consignee. |
| 4. Border crossing | Gürbulak–Bazargan (or the crossing set in the plan) | Turkish exit formalities, Iranian entry formalities, transit document presented. |
| 5. Delivery | Consignee in Iran | Import clearance by the consignee or its customs broker, unloading, CMR signed. |
What changed at the Gürbulak–Bazargan crossing in 2026?
The rebuilt Gürbulak customs gate opened on 27 April 2026. According to the Turkish Ministry of Trade, the facility was doubled to 320 decares (about 32 hectares) and now has 20 crossing points; it was financed under a build-operate-transfer model, and about 200,000 commercial vehicles pass the gate each year.
In August 2026 IRU, the world road transport organisation, visited the crossing with its Turkish and Iranian members and described Gürbulak–Bazargan as one of the region's key road corridors, linking Turkey and Europe through Iran with Central Asia. IRU recommended combining TIR Green Lanes with TIR-EPD. TIR-EPD means sending cargo information to customs electronically before the truck reaches the border.
Traffic at the gate rose as disruption to sea routes pushed more trade onto the road, and waiting times change from week to week. We check the current border situation for each request and include it in the plan we send with the quote.
How does freight from Iran to Turkey work?
Freight from Iran to Turkey uses the same crossings in the opposite direction. The Iranian exporter or its customs broker completes the export formalities in Iran; we align the documents and the loading date with them, carry the cargo to the Turkish border and then either clear it there or move it in transit to the customs office named by the Turkish consignee. Cargo can also continue through Turkey to a third country in transit.
We also run a regular transit lane in the other direction of the corridor: cargo loaded in Russia crosses Iran under customs control and is delivered to Mersin. The corridor table below links to this lane and its 2026 trip data.
Which documents are needed for road freight to Iran?
The exact set depends on the goods and the customs regime, but most Iran shipments use the documents below.
| Document | Purpose | Prepared by |
|---|---|---|
| Commercial invoice | Value and description of the goods for customs | Seller |
| Packing list | Packages, weights and dimensions | Seller |
| CMR consignment note | Contract of carriage between sender, carrier and consignee | Prepared at loading, signed on delivery |
| Export declaration | Export of the goods from Turkey | Exporter or its customs broker |
| TIR carnet or T1 | Customs transit to the exit or destination office | Carrier, through the guarantee chain or NCTS |
| Origin document | Certificate of origin, or the specific origin proof required under the Turkey–Iran Preferential Trade Agreement | Chamber of commerce or customs |
| ADR documents | Dangerous goods declaration and instructions in writing | Shipper and carrier |
A TIR carnet is the international customs transit document of the TIR Convention: it lets goods cross several borders in a customs-sealed load compartment, backed by a guarantee. IRU calls TIR the only global transit system, with 78 Contracting Parties. Under Turkish customs guidance, export goods sent by road to the exit customs office can travel under either a TIR carnet or a T1 declaration in the NCTS system.
Iran acceded to the TIR Convention on 16 August 1984 and Turkey on 12 November 1984, according to the UN Treaty Collection. The national guarantee associations are ICCIMA in Iran and TOBB in Turkey, each with a guarantee of up to EUR 100,000 per TIR operation. The Turkey–Iran Preferential Trade Agreement has been in force since 2015; to claim preferential duty, the origin proof document defined for that agreement is needed, and a standard certificate of origin does not replace it. Import permits on the Iranian side are confirmed with the consignee before loading.
How does a shipment run from request to delivery?
- Request: you send the loading place, delivery place, cargo, weight, dimensions and ready date.
- Planning and quote: we choose the vehicle, the border crossing and the transit document, and send a written quote; payment terms are agreed in writing at this stage.
- Document check: invoice, packing list and any permits are checked before the truck is dispatched.
- Loading: the truck arrives at the agreed slot, the cargo is loaded and secured, and the CMR is issued.
- Customs departure: export formalities are completed and the TIR carnet or T1 is opened.
- Transit and tracking: you receive the truck's position daily.
- Border crossing: we coordinate exit and entry formalities at Gürbulak–Bazargan or the planned crossing.
- Delivery: the cargo is unloaded at the consignee, the CMR is signed and the transit operation is closed.
Who is responsible for sanctions compliance?
Iran is subject to sanctions regimes of the United Nations, the European Union and the United States. UN sanctions were re-applied after the snapback process concluded in September 2025 (UN Security Council, SC/16175); the EU re-imposed its nuclear-related measures the same month (EU Sanctions Helpdesk); US rules are published by OFAC. Whether the goods, the parties and the payment comply with these regimes is the responsibility of the shipper and the consignee. This paragraph is general information, not legal advice.
Which corridors do we run from Europe and Russia to Iran?
Besides direct Turkey–Iran trips, we run three corridors that cross Turkey or Iran:

| Europe to Iran by truck through Turkey | EU loading – Kapıkule – Turkey – Gürbulak–Bazargan | Budapest office coordinates loading in the EU |
| Russia to Iran by road via Georgia | Verkhniy Lars – Georgia – Sarp – Turkey – Gürbulak–Bazargan | Moscow office coordinates loading in Russia |
| Russia to Turkey in transit through Iran | Russia – Iran – Turkey (Mersin) | Active lane: 25 trips between 19 August and 30 September 2026 |
Latest from these corridors: our road freight corridors from Europe and Russia to Iran.
