Voltim Global

Air Freight

Air Freight

Short answer: does Voltim Global handle air freight? Yes. We plan your air cargo shipments through partner airlines and air cargo agents and manage them from booking to delivery through a single point of contact. We work airport-to-airport or door-to-door; customs formalities are handled by our contracted customs brokers, and road transport before and after the airport is coordinated by our own operations team.

Air freight is the fastest option for time-critical, high-value or light-for-their-volume loads. As a freight forwarder, Voltim Global does not operate aircraft itself; together with partner air cargo agents, we choose the right airline and flight connection for your shipment, book the space, arrange the documents and follow the shipment at every stage. This way the air, road and customs steps all run through one contact.

What cargo do we ship by air?

  • General cargo: Commercial goods on pallets, in crates or in cartons; samples, electronics, textiles and machine parts.
  • Urgent shipments: Space on the first suitable flight and a fast road connection to the airport for parts and materials that are holding up production or a site.
  • Dangerous goods (DGR): Shipments falling under the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR) are planned with partner agents and airlines that accept this type of cargo.
  • Project spare parts: Urgent spare parts for breakdowns that bring energy, construction and industrial projects to a halt, together with road delivery from the airport to the project site.

How does the process work?

  1. Quotation: We calculate the chargeable weight from the dimensions, weight and type of cargo, and set out the suitable flight options and the total cost in our quotation.
  2. Booking: Once you approve, we book space on the flight through our partner agent and send the agent a written booking instruction.
  3. Pick-up and delivery to the airport: If required, we collect the cargo from your address and bring it by road to the cargo terminal.
  4. Export customs and acceptance: The export declaration is prepared with our contracted customs brokers; the cargo is accepted at the terminal and prepared for the flight.
  5. Flight and transfer: The departure, transfer and arrival stages are tracked.
  6. Arrival, import customs and delivery: Customs formalities are completed at the destination airport; the cargo is handed over at the airport or delivered to your door by road.

How is chargeable weight calculated?

In air freight, the rate is calculated on whichever is greater: the actual (gross) weight or the volumetric weight. This is known as the chargeable weight. Volumetric weight is usually found by multiplying length × width × height in centimetres and dividing the result by 6,000, which means 1 m³ counts as roughly 167 kg. For example, a pallet measuring 120 × 80 × 100 cm and weighing 90 kg has a volumetric weight of 160 kg, so the freight is charged on 160 kg. Some airlines may use a different divisor; the value used is stated in the quotation.

Air waybills: MAWB and HAWB

The transport document for air cargo is the air waybill (AWB). The master air waybill issued by the agent on behalf of the airline is the MAWB; when several shipments are consolidated under one MAWB, the house air waybill issued for each shipper is the HAWB. At the quotation stage we confirm whether your shipment will travel directly on a MAWB or on a HAWB linked to a MAWB. The AWB number is the key to following your shipment in the airline's system and in our own tracking records.

Dangerous goods (DGR) shipments

Lithium batteries, chemicals, paints, aerosols and similar dangerous goods can be carried by air when they are classified, packed and marked in line with the IATA DGR. A Shipper's Declaration for Dangerous Goods (DGD) signed by the shipper and the product's safety data sheet (MSDS) are required. We check that the documents are complete and plan the shipment with partner agents and airlines that accept this type of cargo. For the ADR rules that apply on the road leg, see our dangerous goods (ADR) transport page.

Customs and door-to-door connections

Air freight rarely ends at the airport. We handle export and import customs formalities with our contracted customs brokers and combine the pick-up before the airport and the delivery after it with road transport. For details, see our customs brokerage and door-to-door delivery pages. Depending on the value of the shipment, cargo insurance is arranged through partner insurance companies.

Tracking and reporting

We record the booking, acceptance, departure, transfer, arrival, customs and delivery stages in our operations system and report the status of your shipment to you daily. Air freight stages are followed on the same tracking and reporting infrastructure we use for our road shipments.

Information we need for a quotation

  • Origin and destination address or airport
  • Number of packages, plus the dimensions and gross weight of each package
  • Type of cargo; for dangerous goods, the UN number and MSDS
  • Cargo ready date and required delivery date
  • Delivery terms (Incoterms) and who will handle customs formalities

Send us these details and we will prepare a quotation with the flight options and costs. Flight times vary with the airline, the transfer point and available capacity; the transit times stated in our quotation are for planning purposes and are not guaranteed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Voltim Global offer air freight services?
Yes. We plan air cargo shipments through partner airlines and air cargo agents and manage them from booking to delivery through a single point of contact. We work airport-to-airport or door-to-door; customs formalities are handled with our contracted customs brokers, and road transport before and after the airport is coordinated by our own operations team.
How is chargeable weight calculated in air freight?
The freight is calculated on whichever is greater: the actual (gross) weight or the volumetric weight. Volumetric weight is usually found by dividing length × width × height in centimetres by 6,000, so 1 m³ counts as roughly 167 kg. For example, a pallet measuring 120 × 80 × 100 cm and weighing 90 kg is charged on 160 kg.
What is the difference between a MAWB and a HAWB?
The MAWB is the master air waybill issued by the agent on behalf of the airline. The HAWB is the house air waybill issued for each shipper when several shipments are consolidated under a single MAWB. At the quotation stage we confirm whether your shipment will travel directly on a MAWB or on a HAWB linked to a MAWB.
Can dangerous goods (DGR) be shipped by air?
Yes, provided they are classified, packed and marked in line with the IATA DGR. A Shipper's Declaration for Dangerous Goods (DGD) signed by the shipper and the product's safety data sheet (MSDS) are required. We check the documents and plan the shipment with partner agents and airlines that accept this type of cargo. Some substances cannot be carried on passenger aircraft and may travel on cargo aircraft only.
How long does an air freight shipment take?
Transit time depends on the airline, whether the routing is a direct flight or a connection, available capacity and customs formalities. We state the suitable flight options and the estimated transit time in our quotation; these times are for planning purposes and are not guaranteed.
How can I track an air freight shipment?
The shipment is tracked by its AWB number. We record the booking, acceptance, departure, transfer, arrival, customs and delivery stages in our operations system and report the status of your shipment to you daily.
What information is needed for an air freight quotation?
The origin and destination address or airport, the number of packages, the dimensions and gross weight of each package, the type of cargo (for dangerous goods, the UN number and MSDS), the cargo ready date and the delivery terms (Incoterms). With this information we prepare a quotation covering the flight options and the total cost.
