The freight rate to Iran depends on the route and distance, full or part load, weight and volume, ADR or out-of-gauge status, customs and transit documents, insurance, border congestion and the availability of a return load. An accurate quote needs the loading place, delivery place, type of goods, dimensions and weight, packaging, ready date and ADR/out-of-gauge details.
What does an Iran freight quote cover?
An Iran freight quote is the price and set of conditions a carrier offers for moving a specific load on a specific date from Turkey, or through Turkey, to a delivery point in Iran. A quote is more than a figure; it also defines which costs are included, the type of truck, the conditions for waiting time and the payment terms. The general definition of freight is in the what is freight entry.
Which factors determine the price?
| Factor | Effect on the price |
|---|---|
| Distance and route | The road from the loading point to the border and on to the delivery city in Iran, and the number of borders crossed |
| Full or part load | A full truckload is priced for the whole trailer; a part load for the weight, volume or loading metres used |
| Weight and volume | Determine the choice of truck type and axle load |
| ADR or out-of-gauge cargo | Adds the cost of a certified driver, suitable equipment, special permits and, where needed, an escort |
| Customs and transit documents | Who handles the export declaration, TIR carnet or T1 formalities changes the scope of the quote |
| Insurance | The cover of CMR liability insurance and of cargo insurance is set separately |
| Border congestion | A truck waiting at the gate cannot run another trip in that time |
| Return load and truck supply | If the truck has to come back from Iran empty, that cost is reflected in the outbound price |
The documents also differ for heavy or bulky cargo: according to the Turkish Ministry of Trade, such cargo needs a TIR carnet marked "HEAVY OR BULKY GOODS" and a special load permit from Turkey's General Directorate of Highways (KGM). Market conditions play a part too: a July 2026 report in the Turkish business daily Dünya, based on data from the Turkish Exporters Assembly (TİM), said that the share of Iranian-registered trucks in export haulage to Iran rose to 71% in January–May 2026. The logic of road freight pricing in general is explained in detail in the factors behind road freight rates and how part-load freight is calculated entries.
What information is needed for a quote?
- Loading place: full address and postcode,
- delivery place: city and address in Iran, and how the truck will be unloaded,
- type of goods: product description and tariff code (HS/GTİP),
- dimensions and weight: gross weight, number of packages, dimensions, stackability,
- packaging: pallets, crates, big bags or bulk,
- ready date,
- ADR or out-of-gauge status: UN number or the dimensions that exceed the limits.
Two further details specific to the Iran lane sharpen the quote: the delivery terms (Incoterms) and where customs clearance will take place in Iran. The tariff code is also needed to check import restrictions; according to the Turkish Ministry of Trade, Iran has banned imports under 2,150 eight-digit tariff lines. This check is the commercial responsibility of the exporter and the buyer; the subject is covered in the products banned from import into Iran entry.
Do payment terms affect the quote?
Yes; they are part of the quote's written conditions. According to the Turkish Ministry of Trade's October 2024 Q&A document on Iran, embargoes on the country mean that foreign currency cannot be transferred through banking channels and letters of credit cannot be opened. The timing and method of freight payment are therefore agreed in writing at the quotation stage. Who is responsible for compliance with sanctions regimes is explained neutrally in the sanctions responsibility when shipping to Iran entry.
How should quotes be compared?
- Whether customs and transit documents are included in the price,
- the conditions that apply to waiting at the border and at unloading,
- the type of insurance and the amount insured,
- how tracking and reporting on the road will be handled.
