Russia to Iran Road Freight via Georgia and Turkey

Voltim Global carries cargo by road from Russia to Iran via Georgia and Turkey: trucks leave Russia at Verkhniy Lars, cross Georgia, enter Turkey at Sarp and reach Iran through the Gürbulak–Bazargan border crossing. Our Moscow office coordinates loading in Russia, and our own team manages the transit documents, border coordination, daily tracking and delivery in Iran.

What is the Russia–Turkey–Iran road route?

The Russia–Turkey–Iran road route is an overland truck corridor that links loading points in Russia with consignees in Iran through the South Caucasus and eastern Turkey. Instead of a direct Russia–Iran border, the truck uses the Verkhniy Lars crossing into Georgia, the Sarp crossing into Turkey and the main Turkey–Iran gateway at Gürbulak–Bazargan. The cargo stays on one truck and travels under customs transit control through Georgia and Turkey.

When does the route via Georgia and Turkey make sense?

The route is worth considering when a shipper wants an overland option with one truck from loading to delivery and one transit document for the whole journey. It builds on our Verkhniy Lars road experience on the Russia–Turkey lane, and it delivers into north-western Iran, where Bazargan is the first Iranian town after the border. The choice between this route and other options is made per shipment, based on the loading city, the cargo and the current border situation.

Which border crossings does the route use?

6. Turkey – IranGürbulak–BazarganTurkish exit and Iranian entry formalities.
7. DeliveryConsignee in IranImport clearance by the consignee or its broker, unloading, CMR signed.

Verkhniy Lars is the road crossing between North Ossetia–Alania in Russia and Georgia. According to the Russian Ministry of Transport, more than 100,000 trucks had passed through its electronic queue by June 2026, and weather can temporarily restrict traffic on the Georgian Military Road.

Sarp, called Sarpi on the Georgian side, is the coastal road crossing between Georgia and Turkey in Artvin province. From Sarp the truck continues across north-eastern Turkey to the Iranian border at Gürbulak–Bazargan, still in transit and under customs seal, so the goods are not imported into Turkey on the way. Each crossing is planned in advance, and the documents are checked against the cargo before the truck leaves Russia.

How does our Moscow office coordinate loading?

Our Moscow office is at Marshal Rybalko 2, korpus 7, office 17 (phone +7 916 009 92 62). For shipments from Russia to Iran it:

  • agrees the loading date and window with the shipper;
  • collects the invoice, packing list and export documents before the truck is dispatched;
  • aligns the export declaration and the opening of the TIR carnet with the exporter or its customs broker;
  • checks the cargo against the documents at loading;
  • keeps the shipper informed until the truck reaches Iran.

Which documents are used on this route?

The route crosses four countries, so one transit document that is valid in all of them simplifies the journey. A TIR carnet is the international customs transit document of the TIR Convention: goods travel in a customs-sealed load compartment across several borders, backed by a guarantee. All four countries are Contracting Parties, according to the UN Treaty Collection:

CountryTIR Convention sinceGuarantee association (IRU)
Russia8 June 1982ASMAP
Georgia24 March 1994GIRCA
Turkey12 November 1984TOBB
Iran16 August 1984ICCIMA

Guarantee levels differ by country; IRU publishes them on its TIR guarantee page. Besides the TIR carnet, a typical shipment needs a commercial invoice, a packing list, the Russian export declaration, a CMR consignment note and an origin document. The free trade agreement between the Eurasian Economic Union and Iran entered into force on 15 May 2025; the origin documents needed to claim preferential duty in Iran are confirmed with the consignee. Dangerous goods also need ADR documents.

What experience do we have on the Russia–Turkey lane?

  • Since March 2024 we have handled more than 450 shipments for the Akkuyu nuclear power plant supply line, using both the Verkhniy Lars road route and the Tuapse–Taşucu RoRo line.
  • Between 19 August and 30 September 2026 we completed 25 trips from Russia through Iran to Mersin, loaded in more than 15 Russian cities.
  • We have carried international road freight since 2014, with more than 1,500 trips across all lanes.

The Russia–Iran route via Georgia and Turkey builds on the same Verkhniy Lars road experience and the same Moscow loading team.

What determines the transit time?

We do not publish a fixed number of days, because the schedule depends on several variables:

  • the loading city in Russia and the distance to Verkhniy Lars;
  • the queue at Verkhniy Lars and weather on the Georgian Military Road;
  • traffic at Sarp, and at Gürbulak–Bazargan, where waiting times changed considerably during 2026;
  • document readiness at loading;
  • the cargo: oversized and ADR loads may need permits and escorts.

We check the current border situation for each request and give the planned schedule in the quote.

Which cargo types do we carry?

We have no office, partner or agent in Iran; the operation is managed by our own team from loading to delivery. For the full picture of crossings and documents, see our guide to Turkey–Iran road freight. Our other corridors: trucking from Europe to Iran through Turkey and transit from Russia to Mersin through Iran.

Latest news: 25 transit trips from Russia to Mersin via Iran.

What information should you send for a quote?

  • Loading place: city, country and, if known, the exact address
  • Delivery place: city and country of the consignee
  • Cargo: description of the goods and HS code if available
  • Dimensions and weight: gross weight, number of packages, length × width × height
  • Packaging: pallets, crates, bags, loose or unpacked
  • Ready date: when the cargo can be loaded
  • Special status: whether the cargo is dangerous goods (ADR class and UN number) or oversized

Send these details through our contact page or call the Moscow office, and we will reply with a route plan via Verkhniy Lars, Sarp and Gürbulak–Bazargan and a written quote.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you ship cargo by road from Russia to Iran?
One option is a single truck from Russia through Georgia and Turkey to Iran. Voltim Global loads the cargo in Russia, with loading coordinated by our Moscow office, opens a TIR carnet, and carries the goods via Verkhniy Lars, Georgia and the Sarp crossing into Turkey, then into Iran at Gürbulak–Bazargan. The consignee or its broker clears the goods for import in Iran. You receive the truck's position daily until delivery.
Can cargo from Russia reach Iran by road through Georgia and Turkey?
Yes. The route runs from Russia to Georgia at Verkhniy Lars, through Georgia to the Sarp crossing on the Black Sea coast, across eastern Turkey and into Iran at Gürbulak–Bazargan. Russia, Georgia, Turkey and Iran are all parties to the TIR Convention, so the cargo can travel under one TIR carnet in a customs-sealed truck. We confirm the route and documents for each shipment in the quote.
Why does the Verkhniy Lars crossing matter on this route?
Verkhniy Lars, Zemo Larsi on the Georgian side, is the road crossing between Russia and Georgia that opens the way to Turkey and Iran on this route. Trucks pass through an electronic queue; the Russian Ministry of Transport reported more than 100,000 trucks through it by June 2026. Queue length and mountain weather on the Georgian Military Road affect the schedule, so we check both when planning each trip.
How long does a truck from Moscow to Iran take?
We do not publish a fixed number of days. The transit time depends on the queue at Verkhniy Lars, weather in the Caucasus, traffic at Sarp and Gürbulak–Bazargan, document readiness and the type of cargo. Waiting times at Verkhniy Lars and Gürbulak–Bazargan have varied widely during 2025 and 2026. When you send your request, we check the current situation and state the planned schedule in the written quote.
Who coordinates loading in Russia?
Our Moscow office coordinates loading in Russia. It is at Marshal Rybalko 2, korpus 7, office 17, phone +7 916 009 92 62. The office agrees the loading window with the shipper, collects the invoice, packing list and export documents, aligns the export declaration and TIR carnet with the exporter or its broker, checks the cargo at loading and keeps the shipper informed until the truck reaches Iran.
Is a TIR carnet used on the Russia–Iran route?
Yes, a TIR carnet is the usual transit document on this route. Russia joined the TIR Convention in 1982, Georgia in 1994, and Turkey and Iran in 1984, according to the UN Treaty Collection. The national guarantee associations are ASMAP in Russia, GIRCA in Georgia, TOBB in Turkey and ICCIMA in Iran. One carnet covers the sealed cargo across all four countries, together with the CMR consignment note and commercial documents.
Do you carry oversized or ADR cargo from Russia to Iran?
Yes. We carry oversized, heavy and project cargo, which needs route checks and permits in each country, including the mountain section through Georgia, and dangerous goods under ADR with suitable vehicles and documents. For ADR we need the class and UN number; for oversized cargo, exact dimensions and weight. Acceptance conditions in Iran are confirmed with the consignee before loading.
