Gürbulak–Bazargan is the main road border crossing between Turkey and Iran, linking Gürbulak in the Doğubayazıt district of Ağrı province with Bazargan in Iran's West Azerbaijan province. According to the Turkish Ministry of Trade, about 200,000 commercial vehicles pass through it every year. The gate reopened in April 2026 after being doubled in size, with 20 crossing points.
Where exactly is Gürbulak–Bazargan?
Gürbulak–Bazargan is the land border crossing formed by the Gürbulak Customs Gate in the Doğubayazıt district of Turkey's Ağrı province and the Bazargan gate in the Maku area of Iran's West Azerbaijan province. The Turkish side is called Gürbulak and the Iranian side Bazargan; in the freight industry the two are named together as a single crossing. The gate carries most of the commercial truck traffic between Turkey and Iran.
Iran's other road gates and the differences between them are compared in the Turkey–Iran border crossings entry.
How was the gate rebuilt in 2026?
The Turkish Ministry of Trade announced the opening of the rebuilt Gürbulak Customs Gate on 27 April 2026. The key figures from the ministry's statement are:
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Area | Doubled to 320 dönüm (about 32 hectares) |
| Crossing points | 20 |
| Investment model | Build-operate-transfer; more than TRY 3 billion |
| Commercial vehicle crossings per year | About 200,000 |
| First three months of 2026 | About 45,000 commercial vehicle transactions |
| Foreign trade volume | About USD 1 billion in exports and imports |
According to the ministry, Gürbulak is the 19th land customs gate renewed under the build-operate-transfer programme that began in 2003. A May 2026 report in the Turkish daily Milliyet, citing data from the Ağrı Governor's Office, said the gate handled USD 656 million of exports and USD 335 million of imports in 2025, with 222 staff carrying out customs procedures in three shifts.
Why does Gürbulak–Bazargan matter?
- It is the main land gate for trade with Iran: A July 2026 report in the Turkish business daily Dünya, based on data from the Turkish Exporters Assembly (TİM), said that more than 90% of Turkey's exports to Iran travel by road, and Gürbulak is the main crossing for that traffic.
- It is central on the Iranian side as well: According to a 2021 item published by the Turkish Ministry of Trade, citing IRNA, 64% of Iran's imports and exports pass through the customs gates of West Azerbaijan province; Bazargan ranks third in the country in this respect.
- It is part of a regional corridor: In a site-visit note published in August 2026, the International Road Transport Union (IRU) listed the Gürbulak–Bazargan route among the region's key road corridors and stressed that traffic from Europe connects to Central Asia through it.
- It is the shared exit of the transit lanes: Transit cargo entering Turkey from Europe at Kapıkule and cargo arriving from Russia via Georgia and Sarp leaves for Iran largely through this gate.
- It connects to the Middle Corridor: In his opening speech, the Turkish Trade Minister described Gürbulak as an important transit point on the Middle Corridor reaching into Asia.
Which shipments use this gate?
Four types of commercial movement pass through Gürbulak: exports from Turkey to Iran, imports from Iran into Turkey, transit through Turkey to Iran and transit through Iran to third countries. The last group is covered in the transit trucking via Iran entry. The route followed by cargo from Europe is explained in the truck route from Europe to Iran, and the route for cargo from Russia in trucking from Russia to Iran via Georgia.
Turkey and Iran are both parties to the UN TIR Convention of 1975. According to IRU's country table, the TIR guaranteeing association is ICCIMA in Iran and TOBB in Turkey, and the guarantee limit is EUR 100,000 in both countries. This is why the TIR carnet is widely used for transit cargo crossing at this gate.
Is congestion at the gate constant?
No. Even with greater capacity, congestion changes with demand, processing speed on both sides and developments in a given period. More crossing points on the Turkish side do not clear the queue on their own when the Iranian side does not accept vehicles at the same pace. The causes of waiting and the steps taken to reduce it are explained in the truck waiting at Gürbulak entry. For an overview of the lanes that use this gate, see Turkey–Iran road freight.
