The ADR driver certificate (SRC5) is issued to a driver who completes the basic dangerous goods training and, where needed, the tank, Class 1 or Class 7 specialisation training at a training provider authorised by the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure (Ulaştırma ve Altyapı Bakanlığı), and passes the Ministry's exam. The certificate is valid for five years; to renew it, refresher training must be taken and the exam passed again before it expires.
What is the SRC5 certificate, and who must hold it?
Its official name is the Dangerous Goods Transport Driver Training Certificate (Tehlikeli Mal Taşımacılığı Sürücü Eğitim Sertifikası), and it is Türkiye's equivalent of the driver training certificate in ADR Chapter 8.2. The Regulation on the Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road (Tehlikeli Maddelerin Karayoluyla Taşınması Hakkında Yönetmelik) requires every driver carrying dangerous goods on national and international roads to hold this certificate. If the quantity stays below the ADR 1.1.3.6 threshold, SRC5 is not required; it is sufficient for the driver to have received the awareness training in ADR 8.2.3.
SRC5 does not replace the professional competence certificate required for commercial transport. A driver carrying cargo must also hold an SRC3 certificate for international transport or an SRC4 certificate for domestic transport; the certificate types are compared in the entry types of SRC certificates.
Which training modules are there?
| Module | Scope | Minimum duration in ADR |
|---|---|---|
| Basic training | Carriage in packages, general rules for all classes, first aid, practical firefighting | 18 teaching units |
| Tank specialisation | Carriage in fixed or demountable tanks, large tank-containers and portable tanks | 12 teaching units |
| Class 1 specialisation | Explosive substances and articles | 8 teaching units |
| Class 7 specialisation | Radioactive material | 8 teaching units |
One teaching unit is 45 minutes. Specialisation modules are added on top of the basic training; they cannot be taken on their own. A driver delivering fuel needs both the basic and tank modules; the rules are explained in the fuel tanker entry.
How is SRC5 obtained step by step?
- Choosing a training provider: The training may only be given by training providers authorised by the General Directorate of Regulation of Transport Services (Ulaştırma Hizmetleri Düzenleme Genel Müdürlüğü, UHDGM); this work is run by the Department of Training and Certification within UHDGM.
- Enrolment and training: The basic training and the required specialisation modules are completed; the attendance requirement must be met.
- Ministry exam: The Ministry holds the exams and announces the results on the UHDGM website. In 2026 the TMGD and SRC5 exams were held on 15 February, 25 April, 28 June and 26 September; results can be appealed.
- Issue of the certificate: The successful driver's certificate is printed by the Ministry with the modules passed recorded on it.
How do validity and renewal work?
The certificate is valid for five years. Under ADR 8.2.2.8.2, if the driver attends refresher training and passes the exam within the twelve months before the expiry date, the new five-year period starts from the expiry date of the old certificate, so no time is lost. If renewal is done earlier than this twelve-month window, the new period runs from the date the exam was passed. Renewal must be completed while the certificate is still valid; dangerous goods cannot be carried with an expired certificate.
Carrying it in the vehicle and inspections
Article 23 of the Regulation obliges the driver to hold an SRC5 certificate appropriate to the class of the substance carried and the mode of carriage, and to present it at inspections. The fine for breaching this rule, written in the Regulation as TRY 637, is increased each year by the revaluation rate under the Misdemeanours Law (Kabahatler Kanunu). In the same inspection, the transport document, instructions in writing and the ADR certificate of approval for vehicles are also checked.
Common mistakes
- Driving a tanker with the basic certificate only.
- Leaving refresher training until the last week and missing the exam calendar.
- Not keeping the certificate card in the vehicle.
How does Voltim Global support you on this?
In Voltim Global's ADR transports, the driver certificate required from the partner carrier is determined by the cargo: tank transport requires a driver with the tank module, explosives a driver with the Class 1 module, and the certificate must remain valid throughout the trip.
