What is a digital freight platform (freight marketplace)?

Last updated:

Short Answer — Digital Freight Platform

A digital freight platform is an intermediary service that matches a cargo owner with a suitable vehicle or carrier online, provides a price within minutes and lets the booking be completed over the internet. By making empty vehicles and return loads visible, it offers speed and price transparency; however, the carrier's authorisation, insurance and identity must be verified separately.

What types of platform are there?

The name "digital freight platform" covers business models that differ from one another. For the user, the most important difference is with whom the transport contract is concluded:

ModelHow does it work?Party to the contract
Load boardCargo and vehicle listings are posted, and the parties agree between themselvesCargo owner and carrier; the platform is not a party
Matching marketplaceAn algorithm suggests a suitable vehicle; the price is fixed or set by tenderMostly the carrier; the platform acts as intermediary
Digital forwarderTakes on the transport in its own name and has it carried out by a subcontracted carrierThe company operating the platform
Carrier's own portalThe carrier sells its own capacity onlineThe carrier

This table determines whom to turn to in the event of damage or delay. Read the terms of use to see whether the platform describes itself as "an intermediary only".

How does it work?

  1. Cargo details: Loading and delivery addresses, date range, weight, number of pallets or LDM, vehicle type and special requirements are entered. Missing information distorts the price and the matching; the information required is listed in the entry on information needed for a freight quote.
  2. Instant price: The system generates a price based on historical transport data, capacity on the route and the season.
  3. Booking and assignment: After confirmation, a carrier and vehicle are assigned; licence plate and driver details are shared.
  4. Tracking and documents: Location is tracked via the app; the consignment note and proof of delivery are increasingly moving to electronic form (see e-CMR).
  5. Invoicing: Items such as waiting time and extra stops are added according to the rules.

What are the advantages?

  • For a standard full truckload, phone calls that would take several hours are reduced to minutes.
  • Vehicles returning empty become visible; a suitable return load can lower the price.
  • Prices for different dates and vehicle types on the same route can be compared.
  • Document and tracking data are gathered in one place, making later reporting easier.

Risks and checklist

  • Fake carriers: Accounts opened with the name and documents of a real company can take delivery of the cargo and disappear. At loading, the licence plate, vehicle registration and driver's identity should be compared with the details in the booking.
  • Chain subcontracting: The cargo may be passed on to a third carrier you do not know about. A ban on subcontracting or a consent requirement should be written into the contract.
  • Insurance: The carrier's CMR insurance policy should be requested together with its limit, validity date and the licence plates covered. For high-value cargo, cargo insurance should also be considered.
  • Authorisation: In Türkiye, companies that organise transport and issue transport documents in their own name are required to obtain a TIO authorisation certificate (TİO Regulation, Art. 5) and to take out carrier's liability insurance (Art. 19).
  • Payment fraud: Last-minute "our bank account has changed" emails should not be acted on without confirmation by phone.

When is it suitable, and when not?

For standard-sized, non-dangerous full truckload or part loads that do not require customs procedures, platforms deliver fast results. For ADR, oversize, bonded transit or very high-value cargo, however, human expertise and advance planning are more decisive, since documents, permits and a route plan are required. The general framework of the topic is explained in the entry on digital logistics.

How does Voltim Global support this?

Voltim Global's TIO authorisation certificate bears the number IST.U-NET.TİO.33.10568 and is valid until 27.03.2031. This number can be verified within a few minutes through the Ministry's query on e-Devlet (Türkiye's e-Government portal); the same check should be carried out for every carrier or forwarder encountered on a platform.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the instant price shown on the platform binding?
On most platforms, the price becomes binding upon booking confirmation as long as the information entered is correct. If the weight, number of pallets or address changes, if there is waiting time at loading or if an extra stop is added, the price is updated according to the tariff in the terms of use. You should read before booking after how many hours waiting charges begin.
Who is liable if damage occurs with a carrier found through the platform?
Liability depends on who is party to the transport contract. If the platform has taken on the transport in its own name, it is directly liable as the carrier. If it only provides a listing or matching service, the counterparty is the carrier that concluded the contract. In international road transport, the carrier's liability is limited by the CMR Convention; separate cargo insurance should therefore be taken out for valuable cargo.
